The Bung Hatta University Teaching and Education Faculty (Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, FKIP) has been an integral part of Bung Hatta University since it began its mission in April 20, 1981. At the beginning of its establishment, FKIP consisted of two departments, namely: (1) Department of Language and Art Education with the Indonesian Language and Literature Education study program and the English Language Education study program, and (2) Mathematics Education Department. In 1982, FKIP opened the Department of Social Sciences with a Pancasila and Citizenship Education study program. In 2006, FKIP opened the Biology Education study program and in 2007, the Primary School Teacher Education study program. In 2011, FKIP opened a program of Informatics Engineering and Computer Education.

Besides carrying out education and teaching at the strata one level in the seven study programs mentioned above, in the 1985 academic year the Bung Hatta University FKIP was entrusted by the government through a Decree of the Director General of Education and Culture Number: 34 / DIKTI / 1985 holding a Diploma Two Program (D- 2) for Indonesian Language and  Education Study Program, English Language Education and Mathematics Education.

As evidence of efforts to improve the quality of institutions in the administration of higher education, in the 1989 academic year, FKIP obtained a recognized status for the Indonesian Language and Education Literature study program, English Language Education, Mathematics Education and Pancasila and Civics Education. Then in 1993, FKIP won an accredited title, namely equalized status, which aligns the quality of the process of learning at private universities with state universities. This means that with the status being equalized, there is no obligation for students of FKIP to take the state examination after graduating from all courses.

In 1998, in accordance with changes in the study program status assessment system, based on the Decree of the National Higher Education Accreditation Board (BANPT), four study programs at FKIP obtained accredited status. The English Language Study Program obtained B accreditation, while the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Mathematics Education, and Pancasila Education and Citizenship obtained accreditation C. The three study programs were successful in obtaining B accreditation in 2001, 2002, and 2003 (until now the acreditation is still B). Biology Education, Elementary School Education and Computer and Informatics Engineering Education obtained C accreditation since the beginning of the study program. Primary School Teacher Education study program successfully obtained B Accreditation in 2014.

Since 2004, several study programs at FKIP have won grant programs. The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, and English Language Education won the A1 Grants Program, the Mathematics study program won the A1 and A2 Grants, the Pancasila Education and Citizenship Education Program won the Hiabh A2 Program, and the FKIP won the PGSD- Grant program B and the Grant Labor Micro Teaching Program.

Since 2006, Bung Hatta University is one of the universities in Rayon 6 as a partner of Padang State University in organizing certification programs for teachers in office. Also, with the title of Accreditation B, since 2009 the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Bung Hatta University was established by the government through the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 015 / P / 2009 as one of the universities to hold an Education Bachelor Program for Teachers in the position (SKGJ).
